NARINJARA, 7 June 2026
Two men were killed by separate lightning strikes in Minbya Township on the evening of June 5, according to local sources.
The victims were identified as 18-year-old Ko Aye Ko Naing from Min Phu Village Tract and 44-year-old U Maung Kyaw Htun from Chaung To (Chin) Village.
Local reports state that Ko Aye Ko Naing was struck by lightning inside his home at around 5:00 PM while taking a shower.
At approximately the same time, U Maung Kyaw Htun was traveling on business from Chaung To Village to Tha Si Village. He was struck and killed while seeking shelter under a large sycamore tree in Tha Si Village.
As the monsoon season approaches the Arakan region, severe weather, including high winds and frequent lightning strikes, routinely causes annual casualties. The Arakan People's Revolutionary Government has issued an advisory urging residents to exercise extreme caution during the rainy season.
This incident follows a similar severe weather event on May 22, when a father and son were seriously injured by a lightning strike in Myit Nar Village, also located within Minbya Township.
