Two Battalion Commanders Killed in Clashes with Arakan Army in Western Magway

Two lieutenant colonels from the Myanmar military were killed in early September during intense clashes with the Arakan Army (AA) at the foothills of the Arakan (Rakhine) Yoma mountain range in Mindon Township, Magway Region.

The fallen officers, identified as Tin Myo Htut and Myat Thin Kyaw, both served as light infantry battalion commanders under the 55th Light Infantry Division (LID 55).

Family members of the deceased have reportedly shared news of their deaths on social media.

According to People’s Spring, a media outlet aligned with the National Unity Government (NUG) that cited military sources in Naypyidaw, the two commanders fell when the AA, the People's Defense Force (PDF), and allied joint forces intercepted military columns attempting to ascend the mountain range.

Heavy fighting persists in western Mindon Township as junta forces attempt to push through the Arakan Yoma mountains toward Toungup Township in Rakhine State, an area currently under AA control.

The military regime has deployed more than 1,000 troops since early June in a sustained effort to cross the mountain range.

However, military sources indicate that despite receiving extensive aerial support, the regime's columns have suffered heavy casualties and remain completely stalled, unable to advance into AA-held territory.
