The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN)’s newest member, Timor Leste, has launched legal proceedings against Myanmar’s junta and its chief, Senior General Min Aung Hlaing, for war crimes and crimes against humanity.
The case was filed by the ethnic Chin Human Rights Organization (CHRO), which said it marked the first such action by a member of the 11-nation bloc against a fellow member state.
Judicial authorities in Timor Leste have appointed a senior prosecutor to examine the case, which was filed in Dili by the CHRO two weeks ago.
