Tanchangya Child Killed by Mortar Shell Explosion Near Bangladesh Border

An 11-year-old Tanchangya (Dainet) boy living near the Bangladesh–Myanmar border died on Tuesday after a mortar shell he collected near the border fence detonated.

The deceased has been identified as Suminaing Tanchangya, the son of Kinghla Tanchangya .

They reside in Baishfari Dainat village in Naikhongchari township of Bandarban district, located along the Bangladesh border.

According to local reports, the child found the unexploded mortar shell on June 2 near border pillar 39, close to the border post in the Naikhyongchhari Township of Bandarban District, Bangladesh.

The fatal explosion occurred later that day while he was handling the device.

"The boy went to work in the garden with his mother on Tuesday morning," a local villager reported.

"Around noon, he discovered an abandoned mortar shell near the Myanmar border fence just below the garden. He brought it back to their temporary hut to play with it, where it tragically exploded, killing him instantly."

Following the incident, the boy’s body was recovered and brought back to the village with the assistance of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) and local police personnel.

"A teenager died while playing with a mortar shell found around noon. The body was recovered from the scene and transported back to the main road," Babul Chakma, a local union parishad member, told the media.

Enamul Hasan, the Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) of Naikhyongchhari, confirmed the casualty.

"I have received reports that a teenager died in a mortar shell explosion roughly 10 yards from the zero line facing Myanmar," Hasan stated.

"While we can confirm the fatality, we are still verifying the victim's official citizenship details."
