Despite the Myanmar military junta’s aggressive ground offensives and violent airstrikes causing casualties among innocent civilians and students across Myanmar, local communities remain steadfast in their determination to dismantle the military dictatorship and build a federal democracy. On the other hand, developments regarding the rights of Myanmar migrant workers and refugees abroad, border security, international diplomacy, and humanitarian assistance remain key highlights today.

Military Affairs, Airstrikes & Internal Conflicts

Kani Township Airstrike: On the morning of November 7 around 11:30 AM, three gyrocopters flying from the Northwestern Regional Military Command launched two consecutive airstrikes on a National Unity Government (NUG) school in Nyaung Pin Lay Village, southwest of Kani Township, Sagaing Region. The bombs directly struck the school buildings, killing eight people, including women.

Myeik Township Airstrike: In Myeik Township, Tanintharyi Region, following an attack on a military outpost, the junta retaliated on the morning of November 6 by deploying a K8W jet fighter and three gyrocopters to launch airstrikes on Mazaw Village. The attack killed at least three civilians, including a person with disabilities, according to KNU Brigade (4).

Kyaikto Township Offensives: In Kyaikto Township, Mon State, military junta forces – which have been conducting ground offensives with thousands of troops backed by air support since November 3 – set fire to and destroyed Kaw Kap Village on November 7.

Border Affairs, Migrant Workers & Fraud Centres

Tensions in Bangkok: Following the physical assault on prominent Myanmar activist Veera Saengthong by right-wing ultranationalist Thais in front of the UN building in Bangkok on November 1, tensions have surfaced regarding some conservative views in Thailand that perceive the estimated 3.33 million Myanmar workers as a threat to national security.

Reopening of Border Crossings: Following temporary closures on October 30 due to heavy fighting south of Myawaddy and stray bullets landing on the Thai side, Thai authorities reopened several border boat landings and local border crossings – including Min Latt Pan, Mae Tao Tha Lay, Ingyin Myaing, Son See Myaing, and Maw Lee Chai – on November 6.

Mirik Native Rescued from Scam Centre: Anmol Senchewry, a native of Darjeeling district, India, was rescued from a cyber scam centre in Myawaddy, Myanmar, after being duped by an online job offer for a call centre. Having suffered severe injuries – including a fractured arm, head trauma, and hammer strikes to his hand – he was brought to Thailand and reached Delhi on October 29, where he is currently undergoing medical treatment.

Environmental Conservation, Education Reform & Technology

Mae Sai Water Contamination: In Mae Sai District, Chiang Rai, Thailand, tap water supply has been 80% restored. However, tests revealed that arsenic levels in the raw water source from the Sai River remain 28 times higher than safety standards due to mining activities upstream in Myanmar. Authorities are planning to tap alternative water resources from Chiang Saen district and develop underground water systems.

Thailand Education Decentralization: Thailand is drafting the National Education Bill to decentralize its education system from pre-school through higher education. The draft law aims to grant public schools financial and administrative autonomy, reduce non-teaching burdens on educators, and align education with evolving labour market demands.

Executive Summary

In summary, the Myanmar military junta continues to escalate its ground offensives and airstrikes targeting schools and villages across the country while attempting to gain diplomatic legitimacy within ASEAN and internationally. However, the resilience of the local population, active advocacy by Myanmar nationals abroad, and sustained international humanitarian assistance continue to keep the spirit and hope of the Spring Revolution alive.
