Domestic and international criticism of junta leader Min Aung Hlaing’s Thailand visit continued to intensify on 7 August, while developments in conflict, human rights, the environment and international relations were also prominent in Myanmar-related news.

Growing Opposition to Min Aung Hlaing’s Thailand Visit

Opposition to the junta leader’s official visit to Thailand on 6 and 7 August continued to intensify.

More than 100 Myanmar nationals living in Canberra, Australia, staged protests outside the embassies of Myanmar, Thailand and the Philippines, condemning Min Aung Hlaing and his entourage. In Bangkok, members of the Yangon People’s Strike hung protest banners near the Myanmar Embassy opposing the visit.

Student unions from three Thai universities and 19 student organizations also issued a joint statement condemning the Thai government’s official reception for Min Aung Hlaing. The groups said the 2021 military coup had led to widespread violence, disrupted education for young people and created a regional humanitarian crisis, urging Thailand not to legitimize Myanmar’s military regime.

Thai civil society organizations also criticized the Thai government’s engagement with Min Aung Hlaing, saying the policy ignored the suffering of the Myanmar people and failed to meet ethical standards. Meanwhile, Amnesty International Thailand called on Thai authorities to prioritize discussions on human rights, civilian protection and accountability during the visit.
