Airstrikes by the military regime killed civilians, including children, in Sagaing Region on 16 September, even as international accountability efforts against businesses linked to the junta gained new momentum. Developments involving resistance forces’ prisoners of war, natural disasters and regional and international news were also prominent.

Military, Fighting and Airstrikes

In Pale Township, Sagaing Region, the military reportedly carried out two bombing attacks on Kanpauk (East) village using two gyrocopters, killing two women and one man.

Myanmar Witness reported that a total of 214 children were killed or injured during the period it described as the military-led “sham election” period, from 28 September 2025 to 25 April 2026.

Of around 80 prisoners of war who escaped while being held by PDF-Zoland following fighting at Kennedy Mountain in Tedim Township, Chin State, around 10 reportedly returned to military forces in Tedim.

Politics, Legal Affairs and Organisations

Justice For Myanmar (JFM) and ICJ Norway welcomed a raid by Norwegian police on Telenor ASA’s headquarters in Fornebu, near Oslo, in connection with allegations of complicity in crimes against humanity in Myanmar and possible violations of Norwegian sanctions laws.

In Naypyidaw, the military’s National Solidarity and Peacemaking Negotiation Committee (NSPNC) held talks with the Restoration Council of Shan State (RCSS).

Domestic News and Crime

In Maungdaw Township, Rakhine State, the family of a girl aged just over two is preparing to appeal after a ULA/AA court sentenced a 16-year-old boy, identified as Maung Paukse Chay, to 10 years in prison for allegedly raping and killing the child.

In Mawlamyine, Mon State, six young people, including two aged 16 and 17, were arrested together with drugs.

An unidentified woman was found dead beside the road near Thingazar Creek in Chan Aye Thar San Township, Mandalay.

Weather and Natural Disasters

Myanmar’s meteorological authorities warned that rain could continue across the country due to a strong monsoon and atmospheric instability, with Ayeyarwady, Yangon and Bago regions expected to receive heavy rainfall.

In Hainan Province in southern China, heavy rain and landslides reportedly forced the evacuation of at least 55,000 people.

Regional and Technology Developments

Although China has established a wide presence in Southeast Asia’s digital infrastructure, ASEAN countries continue to rely mainly on Western and UN frameworks when developing regulations, limiting Beijing’s influence over rule-setting.

In Los Angeles, United States, an NBC-owned KNBC-TV helicopter reportedly crashed while covering a bus accident live, killing three people.

Assessment

Yesterday’s developments show the military regime continuing airstrikes against civilians and children in Sagaing Region. At the same time, pressure is building internationally for accountability from businesses such as Telenor over their unlawful activities linked to the military regime.
