As the military regime’s airstrikes and heavy-weapons attacks on civilians grow more severe, resistance forces’ battlefield engagements, democracy-related messages, and domestic and international news all featured prominently in the news on 15 September.

Military Developments, Fighting and Airstrikes

In Ngazun Township, Mandalay Region, the military reportedly carried out daily attacks from 2 to 15 September on forest areas sheltering displaced civilians, using drones, Mi-35 helicopters and jet fighters. Seven people, including a Buddhist monk, were killed and four others seriously injured.

In Kyaukphyu and Sittwe townships in Rakhine State, heavy fighting between the Arakan Army (AA) and the military has continued throughout September. The AA is reported to have counterattacked and blocked the military offensive.

In Tedim Township, Chin State, around 80 prisoners of war held by PDF-Zoland escaped on 13 September after attacking a guard. During the incident, a Christian pastor was killed and his elder brother was injured by gunfire reportedly from the escaped prisoners.

Politics, Organizations and Statements

The Central Executive Committee of the National League for Democracy (NLD) issued a message marking International Day of Democracy on 15 September, stating that democracy is a system based on the will and voice of the people.

Following the death of Karenni National Progressive Party (KNPP) General Secretary Aung San Myint, the party announced on 15 September the appointment of senior officials, including Khu Plu Reh, to fill vacant leadership positions.

Myanmar’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Kyaw Moe Tun, is serving as the rotating chair of the UN Asia-Pacific Group for September 2026.

Thailand reportedly reduced its visa-exempt stay from 60 days to 30 days from 15 September and limited land-border entries to two times per year.
