Forced recruitment and urban security concerns

According to a 11 September report by Progressive Voice, the Myanmar military is using ward administrators, police, auxiliary firefighters and soldiers in a system resembling organised criminal networks, effectively turning the conscription process into a form of institutionalised human trafficking.

As battlefield losses deepen, the Myanmar military is reportedly intensifying forced recruitment and targeting students, women, urban residents, migrant workers and even recently released political prisoners.

The Rangoon Scout Network (RSN) says forced recruitment, once concentrated mainly in Yangon’s outskirts and suburban areas, is now increasingly occurring in central parts of the city. Young and middle-aged people between 20 and 35 are reportedly being targeted especially at night.

A PACE-Myanmar survey published on 11 September found that Yangon youth are particularly worried about arbitrary arrest, questioning and robbery, with greater concern about personal safety when travelling at night.

Air attacks and local developments

The Karen National Union (KNU) said on 13 September that the military carried out two drone bombings on Bote Sout Khin village in Mone Township, KNU Brigade 3 area, on 5 September. Six people, including a one-year-old child, were killed and eight others were injured.

In Myawaddy’s Ward No. 5, an explosion and fire occurred at around 1:15 am on 13 September involving explosives and gas cylinders placed in a parked vehicle near the Information and Public Relations Office.

In Yangon’s Mingala Taungnyunt Township, the body of a 15-year-old boy who went missing after entering a drainage channel to retrieve a football on 12 September was recovered.

Conflict impact, health and regional conditions

According to the Mae Tao Clinic (MTC), the number of internally displaced people in Myanmar had risen to more than 4 million by August, with access to basic healthcare and emergency treatment remaining a major challenge.

The six-month report of the Interim Magway Federal Unit Government states that health services were provided to 42,153 patients in resistance-controlled areas over a six-month period.

In Rakhine State, cases of skin irritation and other skin diseases are reportedly increasing in many townships, including Ramree, Kyauktaw, Rathedaung, Gwa, Myebon and Mrauk-U, with the number of patients potentially reaching tens of thousands.

In Nyaungdon Township, Ayeyawady Region, around 40 feet of the embankment at mile 11/6 near Chaungphya village collapsed again on 13 September because of structural weakness.

Politics, parties and natural-resource research

The People’s Party held its first conference and fourth Central Committee meeting at the Sky Star Hotel in Yangon. Central patron Ko Ko Gyi said the current situation does not represent a standard democracy and called for greater understanding and trust within the party.

Experts interviewed by the Insight Myanmar Podcast warned that the environmental impacts of rare-earth mining in Kachin State could spread into other countries across the Mekong region.

Regional and international developments

The China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) is increasingly facing criticism because of project delays, growing financial burdens and security weaknesses, which are creating frustration for both China and Pakistan.

Demand for electric vehicles is rising in Thailand amid the Middle East energy crisis, but more than 60 percent of imported EVs come from China, creating challenges for Thailand’s domestic production chain.
