More than five years after the People’s Defensive War was declared and the People’s Defence Force (PDF) was established, the National Unity Government (NUG) held a ceremony on 7 September honouring resistance fighters who have served in military duties. At the same time, the military regime continued airstrikes, drone attacks, forced conscription and rice-purchase restrictions against civilians, while international and regional developments, including natural-disaster warnings, also featured prominently in today’s news.

Fifth Anniversary of the People’s Defensive War and PDF

The NUG held a ceremony at 10:00 am on 7 September to mark the fifth anniversary of the People’s Defensive War and the establishment of the PDF, honouring those who have served in military duties. More than 300 people attended, including NUG Acting President Duwa Lashi La, Union Prime Minister Mann Win Khaing Than, representatives of the CRPH and NUCC, federal-unit governments and parliaments, allied resistance organisations, and PDF/PDO commanders and fighters.

A total of 1,792 resistance fighters received five categories of military honours: one Hero of the People’s Revolution award, 21 People’s Revolution Hero awards, 1,647 People’s Martyr awards, 81 People’s Good Son awards and 42 Revolutionary Service medals.

Separately, Kim Aris, also known as Ko Htein Lin, announced the launch of the “FREE HER” campaign calling for the release of Aung San Suu Kyi, respect for her basic rights, access to her family and her unconditional freedom.

Domestic Military Developments, Repression and Local Incidents

A woman who posted a TikTok video asking for help after her son was allegedly seized for military service was arrested at her home by Myanmar military personnel.

The Women’s Organization of Political Prisoners (WOPP) said female political prisoners at Daik-U Prison in Bago Region are being forced to perform hard labour, including masonry, farm work and night-watch duties, without regard for their health or sentences. The group also reported restrictions on medicine and financial exploitation.

The Myanmar military has reportedly banned villagers from surrounding areas from buying rice in Myingyan, Taungtha and Natogyi towns in Mandalay Region. At checkpoints, people found carrying rice are reportedly subjected to confiscation, physical abuse and threats.

Twenty-eight Chinese, Malaysian, Indonesian and Myanmar nationals allegedly involved in online scam operations were arrested in Maha Aungmyay Township on 2 September, together with around 600 mobile phones, 28 desktop computers and other related equipment.

Speaking on Insight Myanmar Podcast’s “Navigating A Minefield” programme, US journalist Collin Mayfield said the landmine dangers he encountered in Chin State have long-term consequences for health and rehabilitation.

The Myanmar Parliament Union (MPU), under the military authorities, was formed with Union Parliament Speaker Aung Lin Dwe as its chairman, according to the Myanmar Gazette dated 14 August.

Natural Disasters and Weather Warnings

Five people, including a child, were killed following heavy rain and flooding in Kalay Township, Sagaing Region. Although floodwaters have now receded, mud remains and residents are being warned about the risk of diarrhoeal and skin diseases in the aftermath.

In Banda village, Mandalay Region, a solar-powered water supply system supported by UNICEF Myanmar has been installed, giving local residents easier access to clean drinking water.

The NUG’s Ministry of Social Affairs, Labour and Humanitarian Affairs warned that strong monsoon conditions over the Bay of Bengal and a possible low-pressure area could bring thunderstorms across the country through 13 September.

International and Regional Developments

Thailand’s Meteorological Department warned of possible heavy rain in upper regions, with risks of flash floods and runoff from mountain streams.

Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul ordered the deportation of French national Kevin Dimino for violating social rules and the law. Separately, a 32-year-old man, Nanyapat Prueksawangwong, was arrested in Bangkok for allegedly selling sexual videos involving teenage girls.

Around 4,800 sailors from the US Navy’s USS Abraham Lincoln visited Pattaya, generating an estimated 100 million baht for the local economy over a five-day period.

Thai Airways cancelled four Bangkok–Jakarta round-trip flights on 6 September after Jakarta’s main airport was temporarily closed because of the eruption of Anak Krakatau volcano.

At least five people were killed and five injured after an Amazon Prime Air cargo aircraft overshot a runway at Miami International Airport in Florida, struck vehicles on a nearby road and caught fire.

US special envoys held separate meetings with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in efforts to end the war, but no significant agreement was reached because of disagreements over territory.

Assessment

Taken together, 7 September’s developments show the momentum of the Spring Revolution being reinforced through the fifth-anniversary commemorations, even as the military regime continues violence and repression against civilians through airstrikes, forced conscription and restrictions on basic goods like rice. At the same time, natural-disaster risk over the Bay of Bengal and developments across the region underscore that Myanmar’s crisis continues to unfold alongside broader humanitarian and regional currents.
