As Myanmar approaches the 38th anniversary of the 8-8-88 Democracy Uprising, pro-democracy activities, human rights advocacy and political developments have intensified both inside Myanmar and abroad. Public attention has also focused on Min Aung Hlaing’s visit to Thailand, which has prompted protests, criticism from Thai civil society and reactions from the international human rights community.

Ahead of the 8-8-88 Anniversary

The Yangon Public Protest Committee has called on people to take part in the “Umbrella Strike” campaign marking the 38th anniversary of the 8-8-88 Democracy Uprising, while prioritising personal safety and choosing methods of participation appropriate to their circumstances.

Meanwhile, imprisoned Myanmar Now photojournalist Sai Zaw Thaike has been selected as a recipient of the 2026 International Press Freedom Award from the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ), bringing renewed international attention to the deteriorating state of press freedom in Myanmar.

Myanmar has also ranked 173rd out of 174 countries in a newly released Academic Freedom Index, highlighting the continued decline of educational freedom under military rule.
