Myanmar’s military continued a wave of arson attacks and airstrikes on 3 and 4 August that killed and injured civilians and forced more to flee, even as the regime sought to use its rare meeting with Aung San Suu Kyi to improve its international standing. Critics have called the ICRC-brokered meeting a diplomatic manoeuvre by the junta, while the European Union and United Kingdom renewed calls for the unconditional release of all political prisoners and continued direct access to Suu Kyi. Separately, revolutionary forces stepped up pressure against China over its continued interference in Myanmar’s political affairs.

Conflict and Humanitarian Situation

Myanmar military troops advancing through Chauk Township in Magway Region set fire to Nwe Yae Taw village on 3 August; with troops still in the area, the full extent of the destruction has yet to be confirmed.

In Ngapali, Thandwe Township, Rakhine State, the military carried out an airstrike on Gyeik Taw Ward (9) on the morning of 3 August using three fighter jets and one Y-12 aircraft, dropping nearly 60 bombs. Two civilians were injured and several buildings were damaged.

Flooding continues in Laymyethna Township, Ayeyarwady Region, following the collapse of an embankment, with rising waters also affecting Yekyi Township, where authorities have opened an evacuation centre at the town’s indoor sports stadium; about 200 people have taken shelter there, according to military authorities. A volunteer relief truck travelling from Kankone village to assist flood victims in Laymyethna overturned near Khamaung Su village at around 8 am on 4 August, injuring six people, one of them seriously.
