Domestic Social and Health Issues

At the Chinese-owned Myanmar Silver Spring factory in Dagon Seikkan/East Dagon, Yangon Region, workers demanded higher wages. Meanwhile, studies indicate that although China has secured contracts to build digital infrastructure across Southeast Asia, it has made comparatively little progress in shaping the region’s digital rules and regulatory frameworks.

Thailand and the Region

Following visits to Thailand by Myanmar military leader Min Aung Hlaing and Lieutenant-General Ye Win Oo, ASEAN Parliamentarians for Human Rights (APHR) strongly condemned the deepening relationship between the Thai government and Myanmar’s military regime in a statement issued on 20 August.

APHR called on Thailand to end engagement that could confer legitimacy on Myanmar’s military regime and to refrain from security cooperation that could support the military’s operations against civilians.

In Mae Sot, Tak Province, overnight heavy rain caused flash flooding, inundating key commercial areas and residential neighbourhoods.

In another development involving Thailand’s military, military sources reported that Queen Suthida is continuing training to pilot Gripen fighter jets.

Analysis

As of 21 August, armed conflict in Myanmar remains intense, while civilian casualties from airstrikes and difficulties faced by people displaced by the fighting continue to increase. At the same time, military and political relations between the junta and foreign governments, together with Thailand’s increasing engagement with the military regime, are making the regional political consequences of the Myanmar crisis increasingly apparent.

Flooding and landslides along the Thai border, combined with communities inside Myanmar simultaneously facing both conflict and natural disasters, underline the growing need for humanitarian assistance and stronger regional cooperation. Against this backdrop, revolutionary forces are facing continued military pressure while also needing to strengthen political unity, humanitarian cooperation and cross-border coordination.
