Prison Rights Abuses and Labour Protests

The Political Prisoners Network Myanmar (PPNM) said officials at Thayawady Prison in Bago Region were pressuring around 100 political prisoners transferred there during the second week of August to pay 300,000 kyat each in exchange for more comfortable living conditions.

According to PPNM, prisoners who refuse to pay are being forced to clean sewage and perform agricultural labour. The organisation strongly condemned the alleged abuses.

Meanwhile, more than 700 workers at the Myanmar Silver Spring garment factory in Dagon Seikkan Township, Yangon Region, have been staging a peaceful protest since 13 August demanding higher wages. The protest had continued for four consecutive days without any agreement being reached.
