As armed conflict continues across Myanmar, the military authorities have reaffirmed that they will continue enforcing the military conscription law while portraying the outflow of young people overseas as a labour shortage problem. However, the latest UNDP report indicates that young people’s desire to leave the country is closely linked to the ongoing conflict, security concerns, and declining employment opportunities.
Meanwhile, clashes between resistance forces and the Myanmar military continue. According to the Institute for Strategy and Policy–Myanmar (ISP-Myanmar), fighting is likely to intensify in areas where foreign investment projects and natural resource extraction are concentrated.
