Social media users question Min Aung Hlaing’s ‘future-heavy’ 100-day speech

Myanmar social media users are criticising junta leader-turned-president Min Aung Hlaing’s speech marking 100 days in office, calling it long on five-year promises and short on measurable results.

Min Aung Hlaing, who led the 2021 military coup and was sworn in as president in April after a widely criticised election, addressed Parliament in Naypyidaw on 31 July. He outlined plans for democracy and federalism, by-elections in conflict-hit areas in 2027, higher education spending, and energy projects including the Myitsone dam and a nuclear power plant. He also confirmed the military conscription law would stay in force.

The opposition National Unity Government (NUG), Myanmar’s parallel civilian administration, dismissed the plan as a strategy to entrench military rule rather than build peace. One individual social media user was similarly critical, describing the period as “100 Days of Atrocities” marked by continued hardship and loss of life, rejecting official talk of stability.
