Sittwe-Based Junta Battalions and Navy Fire Heavy Artillery into Pauktaw Township

Military bases in Sittwe and a navy vessel anchored in the Kaladan River launched approximately 15 artillery shells toward Pauktaw Township yesterday, according to local residents.

An anonymous Sittwe resident reported that the coordinated bombardment began simultaneously at around 3:30 p.m. on May 21.

“Police Battalion 12, the navy vessel anchored in the river, and a Sittwe-based military battalion all fired toward Thekhon village in Pauktaw Township," the resident said.

"I counted about 15 artillery shells, but I don't know the reason behind the attack.”

Thekhon village is located on the northern tip of Myay Ngu Island (also known as West Phayongka Island) along the Kaladan River, directly opposite Sittwe.

Positioned roughly five kilometers south of Sittwe, the village is currently under the control of the Arakan Army (AA).

Sittwe itself remains heavily surrounded by the AA. The military junta's administration is now confined strictly to the city center, while the Arakan Army controls most surrounding areas outside the city limits.

Clashes between the two forces remain frequent, characterized by regular exchanges of small arms fire, heavy artillery, and drone strikes.
