Rescue and medical teams are overwhelmed in Sagaing after a powerful earthquake left widespread destruction and severe casualties.
“Although we are here trying to save lives, we can’t retrieve the bodies or even rescue survivors trapped under the rubble,” a 20-year-old local resident said.
Religious buildings and monasteries along the Sagaing Hills have collapsed, forcing the injured to receive treatment in open areas. Nuns remain trapped under the wreckage of fallen nunneries, unreachable due to the devastation.
