President Min Aung Hlaing’s new facebook page removed within hours

A new facebook page titled ‘Head of State’, belonging to U Min Aung Hlaing- recently transitioned from military top leader to President- was removed by Meta within hours of its launch on 21 April.

Following his oath as President on 10 April 2026, after a military-organized election, Min Aung Hlaing tried to rebrand his image, transitioning from his role as senior general. However, the new page, which posted military propaganda and a video of the leader, was taken down shortly after gaining only 126 followers.

The removal was instigated by widespread calls from the pro-democracy Burmese people adhering to Meta's ongoing enforcement of its anti-terrorism policies. Meta permanently blocked Min Aung Hlaing and military-owned pages since 2021 due to allegations of genocide and violent actions against civilians.

Min Aung Hlaing stepped down as military commander-in-chief on 30 March 2026 in a move deemed ‘window dressing’ by critics to legitimize the continued military rule. Despite this, his efforts to utilize platforms like facebook are consistently thwarted due to his central role in the 2021 military coup and subsequent conflicts.

As of 21 April 2026, Min Aung Hlaing is considered the President of Myanmar, while Ye Win Oo assumed the role of military C-in-C.
