The National Unity Government (NUG)’s Interim Heritage Administration Central Committee (IBHA) has notified the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) of the destruction of the historic Gokteik Bridge in northern Shan State.
The 125-year-old bridge, located on the Mandalay–Lashio railway, was destroyed by a mine explosion on 24 August. The military junta accused the Ta’ang National Liberation Army (TNLA) and People’s Defense Force (PDF) of carrying out the attack, though the TNLA has denied involvement.
“We also sent a letter during the earthquake. Rather than a complaint, it is a request with solid information,” the IBHA secretary told Mizzima.
The NUG had previously listed the Gokteik Bridge and its surrounding environment as industrial and natural heritage on its Interim Heritage List 1 for northern Shan State on 20 August 2024. The IBHA said it had already warned that heritage sites were likely targets and had coordinated with local PDFs on protection measures.
For the reconstruction phase, the NUG has requested technology, funding, and expertise from UNESCO, while also preparing capacity-building programmes for future leaders. Although UNESCO does not have enforcement powers, it can urge international bodies to take measures, the IBHA noted.
