NUG dissolves Human Rights Ministry to launch independent commission amid surge in airstrikes

The opposition National Unity Government (NUG) has officially announced the dissolution of its Ministry of Human Rights to pave the way for an independent Union Human Rights Commission, marking a structural transition five years after the civilian administration was established in the wake of the 2021 military coup.

It stated that once the Proposed National Human Rights Commission Law is approved by the Committee Representing Pyidaungsu Hluttaw (CRPH), the commission will be formed. The Ministry of Human Rights was established on May 3, 2021.
