Acting President Duwa Lashi La of the National Unity Government (NUG) officially issued a New Year’s amnesty decree on 1 January 2026, granting unconditional release to 110 prisoners and partial clemency to others across the country.
According to the announcement, this move was made in consideration of the interests of the Spring Revolution, the peace of mind of the public, and a high regard for humanitarian principles.
Under Section 401, Sub-section (1) of the Code of Criminal Procedure, which empowers the government to suspend or remit sentences, 110 male and female prisoners were released from various resistance prisons and detention camps without any restrictive conditions.
Furthermore, all remaining prisoners not covered by the full amnesty received a one-third reduction of their current prison terms under the same legal provision.
Despite the sweeping nature of the decree, the NUG did not specify which particular prisons or detention facilities the affected individuals are being released from.
