NLD youth official Moe San Suu Kyi given additional five-year sentence under counter-terrorism law

Moe San Suu Kyi, an official with the National League for Democracy’s (NLD) Central Youth Affairs committee, has been sentenced to an additional five years in prison under Section 52(a) of the Counter-Terrorism Law, despite having already completed a five-year prison term, according to sources close to her family.

The sentence was handed down to her on 6 July, the sources said. The new charge was filed by the Kamayut Township police chief, who alleged that Moe San Suu Kyi had contacted and supported the opposition National Unity Government (NUG), NUG minister Daw Zin Mar Aung, and Civil Disobedience Movement (CDM) participants, and had links to organizations the junta has designated as terrorist groups.

Moe San Suu Kyi is the daughter of former Rakhine State Chief Minister U Nyi Pu. She was first arrested on 9 May 2021 in Yangon and later sentenced to six years under Section 505(a) for incitement and Sections 17(1) and 27(1) of the Unlawful Associations Act. That sentence was reduced and was due to end on 7 August 2025, but she remained held at Insein Prison after the Kamayut Township police chief brought the new charge before her scheduled release.

U Nyi Pu has been detained since the 2021 military coup and is serving a nine-year sentence under Sections 505(b) and 55. He has been transferred from Tharyawady Prison to Insein Prison, according to family sources.
