The National League for Democracy (NLD) on 7 September appealed to the United Nations, the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), and other international organizations to intervene for the immediate release and urgent medical treatment of State Counsellor Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, who remains detained by the Myanmar junta.
The NLD issued the appeal after her son, Kim Aris, sounded an alarm over her worsening health. On 4 September, Aris released an emergency statement saying his mother’s heart condition had deteriorated and that she was being denied proper treatment.
Writing on social media the following day, Aris – also known as Ko Htein Lin – said his 80-year-old mother’s health was deteriorating further and that her current location and access to medical care remained unclear.
On 6 September, Aris held an online meeting with Arakan Army commander-in-chief Major General Tun Myat Naing. After the talks, he said the AA leader had emphasized that genuine peace in Myanmar could not be achieved without the release of Daw Aung San Suu Kyi and other political prisoners.
Since staging the coup in 2021, the junta has detained Suu Kyi, brought 19 cases against her, and sentenced her to a total of 27 years in prison.
