NLD expels 20 members for supporting Myanmar junta’s ‘sham election’

Mizzima

The Central Work Committee of the National League for Democracy (NLD) announced on 25 December that it has expelled 20 party members for allegedly collaborating with the military junta’s upcoming phased elections.

In a formal statement issued from the party’s central headquarters, the NLD declared that these individuals acted against the will of the public and failed to comply with the party’s strict policy of non-recognition regarding the Military Commission’s “sham election”.

The expelled members, who represent various townships across Karen State, Bago Region, Mon State, and Yangon Region, were identified as: U Nyi Nyi Tun, U Aung Ko Oo, U Than Htike Aung, U Aye Lwin, U Tun Win, Daw Cho Nwe Oo, Dr. Phyu Phyu Khaing, U Aung Moe, U Soe Tint, Daw Hla Yi, Daw Mar Mar Lwin, Daw Tin Aye, U San Lwin, U Toe Aung, U Sein Myaing, U Htay Myint, U Than Soe (Economics), Daw Mon Mon Aung, U Nyi Nyi Tun, and U Thaung Htut. The list includes several township executive committee members and chairpersons, particularly from the Yangon area.

The NLD, which won landslide victories in the 2015 and 2020 elections, has consistently rejected any electoral process organized by the military since the 2021 coup.

The party refused to re-register under the junta’s Political Parties Registration Law, leading the military-controlled Union Election Commission (UEC) to announce its dissolution in 2023. Top leaders, including State Counselor Daw Aung San Suu Kyi and President Win Myint, remain in detention.
