Resistance forces detonated two high-intensity bombs at the Township Election Commission office in Ward No. 3 of Kamayut Township, Yangon, in the early hours of 28 December.
An official from the Yangon Army confirmed the attack took place at approximately 2:45 am, just hours before polling for the military junta’s first phase of general elections was scheduled to begin. Despite a heavy deployment of security personnel around the constituency, the joint operation was successfully carried out by the Yangon Army, the Western Region People’s Defence Force, and other forces affiliated with the National Unity Government (NUG).
“We had to retreat immediately after carrying out the attack using two mines as full security had been deployed at the site. We do not yet know the extent of the damage, but both bombs detonated successfully,” the Yangon Army official told Mizzima.
While the exact extent of the damage is still being determined, the operation was intended to disrupt an electoral process that resistance groups and the public have widely condemned as illegal.
The official emphasized that the mission was fuelled by the public’s clear rejection of the polls, expressing gratitude to civilians who chose to boycott the vote and stay home on election day.
“We are doing everything we can. As long as the people do not recognize the illegal election, we are satisfied. Hearing such voices encourages us, and we are grateful to civilians who chose not to vote on election day,” the Yangon Army official said.
