Myanmar Military Ramps Up Airstrikes and Drone Attacks Along Shan-Karenni Border
Myanmar’s military junta has escalated airstrikes and drone bombardments along the border between southern Shan State and Karenni (Kayah) State, hitting civilian settlements and triggering fresh military tensions, local resistance sources reported Wednesday.
On the evening of Sept. 14, junta forces launched drone strikes on a village in Nan Mei Khon Township, injuring a resident. The following morning, Sept. 15, regime forces carried out combined aerial and drone attacks on the 4-Mile area in Demoso Township—a location housing displaced populations—destroying at least one home.
Local defense forces warn that the junta’s drone operations are increasingly targeting civilian-populated areas far from the active frontlines.
The aerial escalation comes as regime troops attempt to push forward from Mobye (Mongpai) in southern Shan State toward Nan Mei Khon in an effort to break the Karenni resistance coalition.
A Karenni resistance commander confirmed that heavy ground clashes erupted during the second week of September as junta columns advanced from Mobye.
Since early 2026, the military regime has sought to regain control over the Mobye–Nan Mei Khon–Demoso Highway, a critical logistics route connecting southern Shan State to Karenni State.
Junta forces stationed in Mobye have routinely used heavy artillery, drones, and airstrikes to target resistance positions along the axis.
Following the surge in violence, the Mobye People’s Defence Force (Mobye PDF) issued a public warning advising civilians to avoid traveling along the highway connecting Mobye and Nan Mei Khon, particularly routes passing near Loiwaing and Liwoe villages along the foothills of Mount Loiying.
