Myanmar Mechanism calls for information on deadly airstrike on hospital in Rakhine State

Geneva, 12 December 2025 – The Independent Investigative Mechanism for Myanmar is seeking information from anyone who witnessed or has direct knowledge of the airstrike on Mrauk U General Hospital in Rakhine State, Myanmar. The attack on 10 December 2025 reportedly struck the 300-bed hospital while it was full of patients, killing at least 30 people and injuring at least 70 others.


Under international law, medical facilities such as hospitals are specially protected civilian objects and must not be attacked. This protection also extends to medical personnel and the sick and wounded. Deliberate or indiscriminate attacks against these protected persons and objects is a violation of international law and may constitute a war crime.


This incident may be one of the deadliest attacks on hospitals since the military takeover in February 2021. It follows numerous attacks on medical facilities across Myanmar, which have further limited civilians’ access to essential services already disrupted by ongoing conflict and violence.


The Mechanism is seeking first-hand information from survivors, patients, caregivers, medical personnel and other witnesses or organizations with direct knowledge of the incident, including:
