A total of 101 inmates, including eleven political prisoners, were released from Pyay and Paungde prisons on 17 April, as part of a nationwide amnesty granted by the junta to mark the traditional Myanmar New Year.

According to sources familiar with the prison community, Pyay Prison released nine political detainees, five men and four women identified as Ko San Tun Aung, U Ye Htut, U Than Aye, Ko La Pyae, U Tun Tun Win, Daw Zun Pwint, Daw Khin Saw Myint, Daw Khin San Tint (also known as Thae Thae), and Ma Chit Nan Wut Hmone. Meanwhile, two political prisoners, Ko Thazin Maung (aka Nyi Nge) and Ko Ye Tun Min, were freed from Paungde Prison.

Ko Thaik Tun Oo, a central committee member of the Political Prisoners Network-Myanmar (PPNM), said, “Most of the political prisoners released were serving sentences under Section 505 and were already close to completing their terms.”
