The Myanmar Military Council has prohibited foreign journalists from reporting on the recent earthquake, citing security concerns.
Maj. Gen. Zaw Min Tun, the junta’s spokesperson, announced the decision on 30 March, stating that foreign media had requested permission to enter the country, but the government could not accommodate them.
He pointed to the widespread destruction, lack of electricity, and water shortages as reasons for the restriction. His statement was also shared on the Military Council’s official Telegram channels.
“Many hotels have been damaged, and several areas still do not have electricity. Additionally, local officials at various administrative levels are currently focused on relief efforts and cannot take responsibility for foreign journalists,” he said.
