Myanmar Junta Airstrike Hits NUG Special Military Command Office in KNU Territory

A Myanmar military jet fighter carried out a targeted airstrike on the Special Military Command office under the National Unity Government’s (NUG) Ministry of Defense on the morning of September 24, causing heavy casualties and destroying infrastructure, military sources report.

At approximately 11:00 AM, a junta jet dropped at least six bombs directly on the command complex, situated within Karen National Union (KNU) Brigade 1 territory in Kyaikto Township, Mon State.

Initial field reports indicate at least 10 casualties among Civil Disobedience Movement (CDM) military defectors and resistance personnel, alongside extensive damage to command buildings and operational equipment.

"The casualties are quite high," a source close to the command center told Mizzima shortly after the attack.

The aerial bombardment was synchronized with heavy artillery barrages from junta infantry and artillery units based in Kyaikto Township and nearby Theinzayat, which fired howitzers and 120mm mortars into surrounding areas.

Local military observers report that the junta is currently advancing ground columns into KNU Brigade 1 territory to secure tactical positioning and establish permanent frontline bases.

Units involved in the shelling include Artillery Battalion 310 based in Theinzayat, as well as Light Infantry Battalion 207 and Division 44 stationed in Kyaikto. Subordinate units under these commands have reportedly been launching daily indiscriminate artillery strikes, inflicting ongoing civilian casualties across local communities.

The NUG’s People’s Defense Force (PDF) General Headquarters established the Special Military Command in early 2025 to consolidate PDF tactical commands, regular battalions, and local People’s Defense Teams (PDTs/PaKaPha) across Mon and Karen States.

The command structure currently oversees five tactical operations commands, 15 battalions, three PDT columns, and six specialized drone units. Operating in coordination with Mon and Karen ethnic armed organizations, it directs joint military operations spanning Mon State, Karen State, Bago Region, and the Ye-Dawei corridor.
