Myanmar ethnic organizations condemn military junta for destroying NCA

On 13 October, seven ethnic political organizations condemned the Myanmar military junta’s actions undermining the Nationwide Ceasefire Agreement on its tenth anniversary. Instead, they urged the international community not to legitimize the junta while reaffirming their commitment to a Federal Democratic Union free from military rule.

The Joint Statement is as follows.

In an effort to address Myanmar’s political issues through peaceful means, the Karen National Union (KNU), Chin National Front (CNF), All Burma Students’ Democratic Front (ABSDF) and Pa-O National Liberation Organization (PNLO), along with four other ethnic organizations, signed the Nationwide Ceasefire Agreement (NCA) on October 15, 2015. NMSP and LDU joined the agreement later, signing on February 13, 2018.

During the implementation of the NCA, the Myanmar military dominated the process, unilaterally obstructing the implementation of agreed provisions through policies of military supremacy and repeatedly violated the terms of the Agreement. However, through the patience, perseverance and a steadfast commitment to peace, we managed to achieve some accords aimed at building a peaceful and future Federal Democratic Union.

The military coup of February 2021 deliberately undermined and destroyed the essence, foundations and objectives of the NCA. As a result, the NCA implementation process was completely destroyed and rendered meaningless.
