How wealthy are Min Aung Hlaing and his family?

One week prior to his inauguration as president in April 2026, media outlets reported that then Senior General Min Aung Hlaing’s family had discreetly acquired a US$3-million luxury villa at Issara Residence Rama 9 in Bangkok, registered in the name of his daughter-in-law with the intention of circumventing sanctions. The transaction was arranged by junta associate Tun Min Latt, who had been convicted in Thailand in 2022 of money laundering and drug trafficking.

Indeed, $3 million is a tiny sum for Min Aung Hlaing and his family. This news isn’t surprising, as many have noted the family’s deep involvement in business in Myanmar before and after the coup. Notably, they are not one of Myanmar’s historically wealthy families.
