The Mandalay Region Government has announced a series of commemorative events for 28 Marh to mark one year since a catastrophic 7.7-magnitude earthquake devastated central Myanmar.

The disaster, which struck at midday on 28 March 2025, remains one of the deadliest seismic events in the country’s modern history, claiming over 3,600 lives and causing widespread destruction to historic landmarks.

The anniversary proceedings will begin in the morning with spiritual and merit-sharing ceremonies. In accordance with traditional customs, alms will be offered to members of the Sangha to honour and share merit with those who perished in the disaster.

Following these religious rites, an afternoon ceremony will be held to formally recognize the social organizations, rescue teams, and frontline volunteers who provided emergency aid and coordinated relief efforts during the height of the crisis.

Recovery and reconstruction efforts remain a central focus for both the Union and Regional governments one year later. While significant progress has been made in restoring critical infrastructure and residential areas, the Mandalay administration continues to work with local ward and village officials to ensure that rebuilding assistance reaches the most vulnerable communities.

The 2025 earthquake, which triggered tremors felt as far away as Bangkok and caused nearly US$11 billion in total damages, has left a lasting impact on Myanmar’s infrastructure and urban planning.

This anniversary serves as a solemn reminder of the loss of life while highlighting the resilience of the local communities and the international and domestic partners involved in the recovery process.
