Two leading human rights organizations have urged ASEAN to end reject the Myanmar junta’s planned election and stop engaging with the military regime.
In separate statements ahead of the 47th ASEAN Summit in Kuala Lumpur, Justice for Myanmar (JFM) and Human Rights Watch (HRW) called on regional leaders to take a firm stance against the junta’s “sham” election and to support democracy and justice in Myanmar.
JFM said ASEAN “has the opportunity at this summit to end its continued complicity by rejecting the junta’s sham election, bar the junta and its representatives from ASEAN and its bodies, and stand with the people of Myanmar in their struggle for federal democracy, peace, and justice.”
