Aung San Suu Kyi’s son Kim Aris has written to the Myanmar junta leader Min Aung Hlaing calling for family access to the jailed democracy icon and for her release.

Mr Aris made this call known at the recent Forum 2000 Conference in Prague held on 11-13 October.

Mr Aris gave a speech at the conference calling for the freeing of not just his mother but also other political prisoners held in Myanmar and provided a copy of the letter.

The following is a copy of the letter:

Senior General Min Aung Hlaing,

I have written to you before regarding my mother, Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, and my family’s request for direct contact with her. I am writing again to renew that request.

The recent ICRC visit provides some reassurance. However, our family still has no direct contact with my mother and has not been informed where she is being held.

My mother is now 81 years old and a Nobel Peace Prize laureate. She has been separated from her family for more than five years.

My request is simple and humanitarian: please grant my mother immediate and direct regular contact with her family, including the ability to speak with us directly, and permit her to receive the care packages we send for her well-being.

I also request the immediate and unconditional release of my mother, Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, so that she can be reunited with her family.

At her age, family contact, proper healthcare, and humane treatment are essential.

I hope arrangements for direct family contact can be made without further delay.

Sincerely,

Kim Aris (Htein Lin)

Son of Daw Aung San Suu Kyi
