Kim Aris backs UN Ambassador Kyaw Moe Tun ahead of General Assembly credentials review

Kim Aris, the son of jailed State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi, has publicly endorsed Ambassador Kyaw Moe Tun to remain as Myanmar’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, describing him as an “effective representative” of the Myanmar people.

Calling on international supporters to sign an online petition backing the diplomat, Aris’s endorsement comes ahead of the 81st Session of the U.N. General Assembly (UNGA) in September, where the nine-member U.N. Credentials Committee will evaluate competing claims for Myanmar’s seat.

“Ambassador U Kyaw Moe Tun has made sure the voice of the people of Burma is heard at the United Nations,” Aris stated in a social media post on Aug. 27.

Kyaw Moe Tun has retained Myanmar’s U.N. seat for five years through annual deferrals by the U.N. Credentials Committee. The regime in Naypyidaw has repeatedly attempted to replace him since seizing power in the February 2021 coup.
