Kim Aris backs Kyaw Moe Tun campaign to remain at UN; Min Aung Hlaing blames sanctions for economic woes

Aung San Suu Kyi’s son backs Kyaw Moe Tun campaign to remain

Jailed State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi’s son, Kim Aris, expressed his support for Ambassador Kyaw Moe Tun continuing in his role as Myanmar’s Permanent Representative to the U.N., calling him an “effective representative” of the people of Burma.

“Ambassador U Kyaw Moe Tun has made sure the voice of the people of Burma is heard at the United Nations,” Aris stated in a social media post on Aug. 27, calling on his supporters to rally behind Ambassador Kyaw Moe Tun by signing an online petition.

Aris’ call comes ahead of the 81st Session of U.N. General Assembly (UNGA) in September, where the nine-member U.N. Credentials Committee will review the credentials of member states’ representatives. The regime in Naypyidaw has been trying to replace Kyaw Moe Tun as U.N. ambassador since it seized power on Feb. 1, 2021.
