KIA Recaptures Military Bases in Indaw and Mawlu

NARINJARA, May 24, 2026

Rebel forces led by the Kachin Independence Army (KIA) have reportedly recaptured several military bases from the Myanmar junta in the Indaw and Mawlu areas of the Sagaing Region.

The operation comes amid a broader military offensive by the junta forces across Sagaing and Kachin State.

According to Kachin military sources, the bases were secured during a coordinated counter-offensive by the KIA and its allied joint forces.

Among the reclaimed areas is Si Paing village, located on the Mandalay-Myitkyina Road between Mawlu and Nam Si Aung. The village had been briefly occupied by junta troops during their advance into Indaw.

The strategic base in Nam Si Paing was retaken on May 21 following fierce, close-quarters combat. Sources state that the military suffered heavy casualties and lost a significant cache of weapons and ammunition during the clash.

KIA spokesperson Colonel Naw Bu confirmed that fighting remains highly intense across the Mawlu area.

A joint revolutionary force has now seized multiple positions along the primary Mandalay-Myitkyina highway and is actively launching assaults on the main towns of Indaw and Mawlu.

The junta had previously regained control of Indaw town in late April before pushing its offensive into Mawlu in early May.

Clashes continue to escalate daily, spreading to Nat Myin Lay, Nat Myin Gyi, and Thak Kyin villages within Indaw Township.

Due to the proximity of the heavy fighting to urban centers, resistance fighters have issued urgent warnings to all remaining civilians to evacuate the area immediately.
