KIA Rebuffs Beijing Doubts Over Myanmar Uprising: Remember China’s History

Kachin Independence Army (KIA) leader Lieutenant-General Gun Maw says he firmly pushed back when a senior Chinese official recently questioned whether anti-junta forces have the strength to defeat Myanmar’s military. In response, he drew a comparison with China’s own revolutionary history.


Speaking at a ceremony marking the 65th Kachin Revolution Day on Sunday, Gun Maw recalled that the Beijing official had asked whether the resistance truly believed it could prevail with its current resources.


“I told him to look at China’s own past,” he said. “Wasn’t it the side backed by the U.S. and Russia that fled to Taiwan, while the other side—which received no outside help—finally won?
