The Kachin Independence Army (KIA) has taken control of parts of downtown Bhamo, the second-largest city in Kachin State, amid escalating clashes with junta forces, KIA spokesperson Colonel Naw Bu confirmed on 7 January.
“Our KIA troops have entered and secured positions in some parts of the town. Fighting is ongoing, with the main confrontation centred around Military Operations Command (MOC) No. 21, where junta forces are regrouping and resisting,” said Colonel Naw Bu.
Bhamo, a strategic location for the military, hosts MOC 21 and at least 17 battalion camps. While the KIA has reportedly captured multiple junta camps, Colonel Naw Bu declined to provide specific details. Sources indicate that the junta has resorted to airlifting supplies to its besieged forces in the MOC 21 base.
