Junta’s Poll Stacks New Parliament With Generals, Cronies and Loyalists

Myanmar’s new parliament, expected to convene in March, will be dominated almost entirely by the military‑backed Union Solidarity and Development Party (USDP) after the junta’s three‑phase election delivered the party sweeping victories across all chambers.

The incoming legislature will be stacked with retired generals. Among them are ultranationalists, hate‑speech promoters, pro-junta militia patrons, military officers who oversaw bloody crackdowns on anti-coup protesters, and a number who were involved in junta war crimes.

The junta held its election in December and January after dissolving the popular National League for Democracy (NLD) and jailing President U Win Myint and State Counselor Daw Aung San Suu Kyi.
