Junta forces torch over 50 homes in Mindon township raids following election phase 2 clashes

Myanmar junta troops have reportedly burned down approximately 55 homes in the western part of Mindon Township since 21 January, 2026, forcing nearly 1,000 residents to flee into nearby forests.

Local sources and revolutionary groups reported that the raids targeted several villages, with 15 houses destroyed in Htan Lay Pin on 22 January and 40 more in Wet Kaw village on 26 January.

“This destructive action, in my opinion, is being carried out by Military Commission troops in order to clear and control the area. They are currently moving into Thee Pin Kone village and Pyaung village. Some locals have been detained,” he said on 25 January.

According to another local resident, the Military Commission forces also looted property from homes in the villages they raided.

“They seized locals’ belongings, including motorcycles, cars, tricycles, and food supplies, in Pyaung, Thee Pin Kone, Thaphan Yaung, and Htan Pin Kone villages,” he said.

Due to the Military Commission’s raids on villages, nearly 1,000 local villagers of Wet Kaw, Pyaung, Thee Pin Kone, Thaphan Yaung, and Htan Pin Kone villages have fled to safety.

Mindon Township is part of Thayet District and was included in the Military Commission’s Phase 2 elections. During that period, local revolutionary forces attacked the Military Commission troops who were providing security while transporting ballot boxes from Mindon to Thayet.
