A military junta airstrike on the upper Laymyo River area in Paletwa Township, Chin State, has killed at least seven people and injured many others, according to local sources.
Junta jet fighters and Y-12 aircraft launched the airstrike after 2:00 p.m. on October 18, targeting the upper Laymyo River area along the borders of Paletwa, Matupi and Mindat townships.
“At least seven people were killed, and many others were wounded, including some in critical condition, according to what I have learned,” said a Paletwa resident familiar with the incident. “As communication lines are severely disrupted, gathering detailed information remains difficult.”
Those killed and injured include residents of Thanhtaung and Wetchaung villages in the upper Laymyo River area of Paletwa Township, as well as travellers from Arakan State.
Locals said the casualty toll was high because the targeted area serves as a major river confluence and a key cargo transportation junction.
“We learned that around 20 bombs were dropped,” said another Laymyo River resident. “The boat dock at the river confluence is a busy terminal for motorized boats where local traders and residents work. Reports indicate that more than 10 people were injured.”
On August 26, a junta airstrike on Meezar Village along the Kaladan River in Paletwa Township killed two villagers and injured at least six others.
Amid continued military setbacks across Arakan State, the military junta has intensified aerial bombardments targeting civilian population centres across Arakan State and Paletwa Township, increasing civilian casualties.
