ILO sanctions Myanmar junta, labour groups applaud action

Mizzima

The International Labour Organization (ILO) Governing Body has moved to impose sanctions on the Myanmar junta under Article 33, a move lauded by labour groups including the Confederation of Trade Unions, Myanmar (CTUM).

The decision, reached during the 353rd session of the ILO Governing Body in Geneva from 10 to 20 March, with intense discussions taking place on 19 March, aims to restrict the junta’s financial resources and address its egregious violations of labour and human rights.

The resolution, drafted following intense discussions on 19 March, is expected to be formally adopted at the ILO conference in June. Phyo Sandar Soe, Deputy Secretary-General of CTUM, who attended the meeting, confirmed that the decision mirrors sanctions imposed in 2000.

“Just like in 2000, the decision was made to impose sanctions on the junta, cut off its sources of income, and review relations with the junta,” she said.
