Just 18 days before its widely dismissed election is due to begin, the Myanmar regime on Wednesday bombed a busy hospital in Mrauk-U, Rakhine State, killing 33 people and injuring 76, including children, as its forces escalate pre-poll attacks on areas not under the regime’s control.

Mrauk-U, an historic town that centuries ago served as the capital of the Arakanese kingdom, was captured by the ethnic Arakan Army (AA) in February last year.

According to a local resident, a junta aircraft dropped two 500-pound bombs on Mrauk-U General Hospital at around 9 p.m. on Wednesday, which was marked around the world as Human Rights Day.
