Home Affairs Minister security agencies to strengthen coordination for safe third-phase voting

In order to ensure that the people can vote safely in the third phase of the election, the Union Minister for Home Affairs, Lt. Gen. Tun Tun Naung, said that the security organizations under the Ministry of Home Affairs should coordinate and strengthen the security plans and effectively implement them.


The seventh work coordination meeting of the Central Committee for Supervision of Election Security was held on the afternoon of January 20 at the Arindama Hall of the Myanmar Police Force Headquarters. At the meeting, the Chairman of the Central Committee for Supervision of Election Security and Union Minister for Home Affairs Lt. Gen. Tun Tun Naung, made the following statement.


At the meeting, the Union Minister said that the multi-party democratic general election phase (1) and phase (2) were successfully held according to the dates announced by the Union Election Commission. The multi-party democratic general election was held in phases, and the turnout of eligible voters was 52.13 percent in phase 1 and 55.95 percent in phase 2.


Despite the terrorist acts that disrupted and destroyed the multi-party democratic general election, the Home Minister said that voters actively and disciplinedly voted of their own free will.


The weaknesses encountered during phase 1 were reviewed and security measures were strengthened, which led to better implementation of phase 2. Therefore, phase 3 of the election will be held in a peaceful and secure manner. The forces and departments under the command of the Ministry of Home Affairs have been deployed to ensure that voters can vote in peace and security. The Minister of Home Affairs said that the security forces will be strengthened and implemented effectively in accordance with the security plans in coordination with the militias, public security and counter-terrorism teams and partner organizations.


The Minister of Home Affairs said that the regions and states, districts, and townships multi-party democratic general election security supervision committees should coordinate with relevant departments and organizations to ensure that political parties and parliamentary candidates competing in the phase 3 of the multi-party democratic general election strictly follow the rules and regulations announced by the Union Election Commission in their election rallies and campaigns.


In addition, the Minister of Home Affairs said that the perpetrators of various methods to disrupt the electoral process were identified and taken action. As of January 19, 2026, 331 cases were taken under the “Law on the Protection of Multiparty Democratic General Elections from Obstruction, Disruption, and Destruction” in the Union Territory and each region and state. The Minister of Home Affairs said that there were 404 people, including 324 male and 80 female defendants, and that those who commit incitement and propaganda that may harm the security of the election will continue to be investigated and punished.


Then, the chairmen and secretaries of the region and state multi-party democratic general election security supervision committees participating in the election phase (3) explained and discussed the security measures for the election phase (3) by region and state, the security of elected Hluttaw representatives after the election, and the security measures for convening each Hluttaw. The members of the Central Committee, vice-chairmen, and representatives of the Union Election Commission made additional suggestions and discussions.


The meeting was attended by the Chairman of the Central Committee for the Supervision of Election Security and Union Minister for Home Affairs, Lt. Gen. Tun Tun Naung, and vice-chairmen, members of the Central Committee, representatives of the Union Election Commission, the Chairman and members of the Nay Pyi Taw Union Territory multi-party democratic general election security supervision committee, Officials from the Myanmar Police Force Headquarters, and the chairman and members of the multi-party democratic general election security supervision committees from each region and state attended via video conference.
