First phase of new Thanlyin Refinery soon to be operational

The first phase of the new Thanlyin Refinery, which will be able to process 500,000 tonnes of crude oil per year, will soon be operational, said Acting President and Chairman of the State Security and Peace Commission Senior General Min Aung Hlaing.
Senior General Min Aung Hlaing made the remarks at the opening ceremony of the Ministry of Energy’s 40th Ruby Jubilee, the Centenary of the Thanlyin Oil Refinery, and the Energy Museum at the No. (1) Refinery(Thanlyin) in Thanlyin Township, Yangon Region on the morning of December 24.
The second phase, which will be able to process 3 million tonnes of crude oil per year, will continue to be implemented.
The refinery has been suspended since 2017 due to a lack of raw materials and insufficient quality of the fuel oil produced.
Senior General Min Aung Hlaing also instructed the Ministry of Energy to work with oil companies from friendly countries and indigenous entrepreneurs to systematically explore and utilize the country’s oil and gas resources.
The Ministry of Energy was instructed to successfully implement the use of AI technology in oil and natural gas exploration, and to carry out the work with the objectives ranging from ensuring energy sufficiency for the country to achieving energy independence.
