Thousands of families fleeing conflict in Karenni State are facing a new threat to their survival, as water shortages take hold in displacement camps.
“We spend most of our money on water. We don’t have regular jobs and there are so many daily expenses, including for cooking,” a new mother from Sein Yaung Kyal camp told the Irrawaddy.
“We need a lot of water because I have to wash the baby and clothes. The cost of water is soaring, but it’s something we can’t live without”, she said, adding that her eight-member household was supported solely by her husband’s unstable earnings as a casual worker.
