FBI Says China Backs Myanmar Scam Compounds Targeting Americans

US investigations into Southeast Asia’s online scam syndicates are expanding sharply, with FBI Director Kash Patel accusing the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) of helping build scam compounds in Myanmar and elsewhere in Southeast Asia that target ordinary Americans.
“These are literal compounds fleecing Americans and senior citizens all the way from Southeast Asia because they are backed by the CCP to build those compounds because they know its gonna hurt everyday Americans,” Patel told the Senate Intelligence Committee on Wednesday.
Patel said the FBI has launched a high‑priority operation against online fraud networks and opened a dedicated domestic complaint center for victims. Washington is also working with regional governments to cut internet access to the compounds, many of which are located in Cambodia and in Myanmar along the Thai border.
